Actors from idol groups are taking hold of the screen and CRTs. Big Bang’s TOP (T.O.P, Choi Seung Hyun) and 2PM’s Taecyeon (Ok Taecyeon) are at the forefront. The two singers-turned-actors have definitely gotten their foothold in their respective movie Into the Gunfire and drama ‘Cinderella’s Sister.’
TOP, proved that he could act through Into the Gunfire
The movie Into the Gunfire gathered a million viewers its first week and is becoming a daily box-office sensation. It could very well break 2 million viewers by this weekend. TOP has appeared before in the movie 19 and drama ‘IRIS,’ but had yet to clearly show his ability as an actor.
TOP had slowly gained acting experience through a lead role in a small-scale movie and through a lightweight supporting role in successful drama. This could be considered a safe way to go, because although his acting was lacking, there was no need for him to take full responsibility for it.
After checking his potential as an actor in these two projects, he proudly took on the lead in Into the Gunfire and spread open his ability. He built up his reputation by flawlessly assimilating the role of Oh Jang Bum, who began as a young student soldier who never shot a gun and transformed into a lieutenant leading his fellow soldiers. Showing a resolve to protect his nation through innocent eyes that are filled with fear, TOP is emerging as a young star movie critics are keeping their eyes on.
Taecyeon, a star-class debut
2PM’s Taecyeon’s potential was recognized from his debut. He pulled his fair share as a supporting cast to Moon Geun Young, Chun Jung Myung, and Suh Woo in KBS2 WTh Drama ‘Cinderella’s Sister,’ which aired not too long ago.
Unlike TOP, Taecyeon took on a major supporting role in a weekly mini-series and gained the concern of those around him. Despite the opposition of his fellow 2PM members, Taecyeon passed the test by relatively smoothly assimilating to a character that is pretty similar to his image in real life. It seems like he found good results by sticking to territory that he could handle instead of taking on a difficult task.
Taecyeon’s company JYP remarks that after the success of ‘Cinderella’s Sister,’ drama and movie producers are lining up to cast him. If there’s anything different from before his debut, it would be that he’s receiving enough credit to be offered the lead role in movies. According to his company, Taecyeon will prepare for his next project after September, after committing to activities with 2PM.
